The Y NSW welcomes the recent release of ACECQA's rapid assessment of child safe practices across the ECEC sector.

The Y NSW welcomes the recent release of ACECQA's rapid assessment of child safe practices across the ECEC sector.

The findings reinforce an important truth: child safety is not only shaped by policy, but by how supervision and staffing decisions are applied in practice every day. Greater clarity around what constitutes adequate supervision is a positive step forward, particularly where ambiguity has allowed technically compliant approaches that may not always reflect safe outcomes for children.

At the Y NSW, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, upheld through strong governance, leadership, and accountable operational practice. Day-to-day decisions such as rostering, supervision, and workforce planning must consistently prioritise children’s safety and wellbeing above efficiency or convenience.

While this progress is encouraging, more work remains. Consistent supervision standards are essential, and we believe every OSHC service should have at least two educators always present to ensure visibility, shared responsibility and safer environments for children and educators alike.

We look forward to continued collaboration with government and the sector to strengthen safeguards and ensure we work together to prioritise child safety in NSW.
