Free swimming lessons for kids at your local YMCA this September and October

21 Sep 2016 - Media ReleasesRecreation

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn life-saving water safety skills – which is why YMCA NSW swim schools are delighted to offer a free swimming lesson to all children under 5 in September and October.

Starting on 19 September, the free lesson is available during national Learn to Swim Week (24 September-2 October) through until 16 October.

Learn to Swim Week is an awareness campaign aimed at reminding parents of the importance of teaching kids aged under five to swim.Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in children in this age group worldwide.

YMCA NSW CEO Leisa Hart said: “YMCA NSW is one of the largest providers of swimming lessons to children in NSW and the ACT, instructing 16,000 kids every week.

“Swimming lessons are not mandatory in Australia for children and it concerns us greatly that thousands of kids don’t have access to lessons for a range of reasons including cost.

“We strongly believe all children should have the opportunity to learn to swim and as such we are delighted to offer free lessons during Learn to Swim Week and to further extend this offer through to October 16.”

To register, parents can contact their local YMCA swimming pool by phone, through the website or by visiting the centre. The offer is for children not already registered or enrolled in YMCA swimming lessons. The free lesson offer is available from 19 September-16 October 2016.
