Adult Learn to Swim enrolments blown out of the water at Mount Annan Leisure Centre

17 Mar 2021 - Media ReleasesRecreation

Adults and teens are taking to the water in record numbers at Mount Annan Leisure Centre as the Y NSW stresses it’s never too late to learn to swim.

The Y NSW recently expanded its adult swim offering to compensate for a boom in numbers over summer, with adult enrolments more than four times what they were six months ago.

Learn to Swim Coordinator at Mount Annan Leisure Centre Ned Anson said it’s encouraging to see the importance of swim skills acknowledged across all age groups.

“This Summer has been huge for adult numbers, which have quadrupled over the last 6 months,” Ned said.

“Swimming is such an integral part of Aussie life. It’s so important that parents are confident in their own skills as well as their children’s ability to be able to safely navigate an aquatic environment.

According to Royal Lifesaving Australia, of the 89 drownings in 2020, 65% were aged between 25 and 74 years old at the time of their tragic death.

Ned said Mount Annan Leisure Centre is striving to tailor lessons to adult and teen learners, so nobody feels out of place.

“If you’re a complete beginner and you’re 14 years old, you’ll go into a class with teens who are also beginners, rather than feeling awkward in a class of little kids,” he said.

“We also run separate beginner and intermediate classes for adults to ensure everyone is progressing and improving at their own unique level.”

The strong adult and teen numbers at the swim program at Mount Annan have been replicated across the board, with enrolments exceeding pre COVID numbers.

“For the first time we’ve opened up a new Saturday afternoon stream, now we’ve got six teachers working the new shift,” Ned said.

“We’ve also added additional teachers to staff afternoons during the week, ensuring we’re meeting our COVID Safe requirements while still delivering a great quality program that meets the growing demand.”

Mount Annan Leisure Centre is proudly operated by the Y NSW on behalf of Camden Council.
