Gymnastics: FAQ's

BEHAVIOUR CODES

Responsibility of the Gymnast

  • Always arrive on time for your lesson.
  • Do not enter the gym until your class starts.
  • No jewellery or watches to be worn in the gym.
  • Loose clothing, shoes, bags and drinks to be left in the storage area provided.
  • Hair is to be tied back at all times - no butterfly clips or headbands.
  • No food, gum or drink is to be taken into the gym.
  • All injuries must be reported to your coach.
  • When waiting for your class - keep the noise down.
  • Follow all instructions given by your coach (they are given to help keep you safe).
  • No running in the gym.
  • Leave the gym as soon as your class has finished.
  • Parents and children not involved in the class must stay in the viewing area.

Responsibility of the Parent

  • Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment
  • Parents are responsible for the safety of children not involved in classes.
  • Encourage children to participate in sport, do not force them.
  • Focus on your child’s individual efforts, not on whether they win or not.
  • Never ridicule a child for making a mistake.
  • Always encourage your child to respect their coach and other members of staff.
  • Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performances and treat others with respect.
  • Respect the decisions made by coaches and judges and use appropriate methods of expressing concern.
  • Show appreciation for all coaches, judges and administrators - without them your child could not participate.
  • Ensure you know the rules of the gym and teach them to your child.
  • When your child returns to training after injury or illness you will be required to supply a medical certificate clearing them to return to training.

 

FOOD/DRINK

What food/drink am I allowed to bring in the Gym?

With the exception of water, NO FOOD OR DRINK is allowed in the Gym at all time.

Food and Drink can be enjoyed in the reception area outside.

 

PICK UP/DROP OFF

What do I do if I am running late to pick up my child?

If you are running late, please call the Centre on 9771 6033.  A YMCA Staff Member will supervise your child until you arrives

 

PAYMENTS

When does my payment leave my account?

Payments are made fortnightly on a Friday via the Direct Debit System. Direct Debit Calendars are available at Front Reception.

 

What happens if a payment is rejected?

The first payment attempt will take place on the allocated Direct Debit date. If the payment is unsuccessful, a second attempt will take place the following Tuesday.

If both payments are unsuccessful you will be contacted by our admin team to make a manual payment and a $5 rejection fee will be added onto your account.

 

SUSPENSIONS      

When can I suspend payment?

Suspensions can be made at any time as long as you give 2 weeks’ notice. An amendment form must be completed and handed into reception. All members can only suspend for a total of 4 weeks in a year.

 

What if my child is sick /injured?

The YMCA can suspend payment for the period recommended by a medical practitioner. A medical certificate must be presented to receive a medical suspension or credit for missed lessons.

 

MAKE UP CLASSES

What are make ups for?  
Make ups are available for any child that misses their scheduled class.

When can my child do make ups?

Make up classes can be booked anytime, as long as we are notified PRIOR to their class commencing.

Important to note:

  • Makeup’s are only based on availability.  The YMCA can not guarantee that there will be available space in classes.
  • Make ups must be completed within 2 weeks of the missed class
  • All make ups must be booked at the time of call.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY/CENTRE PROMOTIONS

Membership Permission
As of the YMCA Terms & conditions, your child may be included in photos or videos taken by a YMCA staff member with the use of a centre camera.

Can I take photos of my child in the gym?

Photography within the gymnasium is prohibited due to child safety.

 

FEEDBACK

Who do I speak to if I have feedback (positive or negative)? 
All feedback should be addressed by filling out a feedback form located at reception. The Manager/ Coordinator related to the complaint will then get back to you ASAP. Please ensure you provide correct contact details on the form.  

 

GYMNASTICS FRAME WORK

What is the difference between Colours, Stages and Advanced Stages?

Colours

  • Gymnasts learn all the basic skills of gymnastics. Gymnasts will participate in 5, 10min rotations of:
    • Girls:  Bars, Beam, Floor, Vault and Handstands
    • Bars, Rings, Floor, Vault, Parallel Bars and Pommel Horse (Combined)
  • Colours is made up of PINK/ORANGE, BLUE and RED levels.

Stages

  • Builds on the basic foundations of gymnastics and teaches slightly more technical skills with a greater focus on body tension and strength.
    •  Each rotation goes for 15mins, with a strength component included.
  • Stages is made up of Stage 1-7

Advanced Stages

  • A junior competitive program whereby gymnasts will learn technique and skills related to prescribed routines. They will complete these routines at both internal and external competitions.

Why do gymnasts do testing?

We use testing as a means of assessing and tracking your child’s gymnastic development. Each term your child learns new and more difficult skills. Testing allows us to move your son and/or daughter through the colours and stages as they improve.

What happens in testing?

  • Each child is individually assessed on their ability to perform a checklist of skills. Gymnasts will be taught these skills by their coaches during the term.
  • The coach gives each skill a score out of 5 based on the child’s ability to perform that skill. The scores are then placed in into a spreadsheet to determine the average score of all skills assessed.
  • Once it is determined that the gymnast can perform all prescribed skills competently and safely your child will be moved up a colour or stage.

What happens in if my child misses testing?

  • Testing occurs over 2 weeks (week 8&9) if the child cannot attend during that time they must arrange an alternative time with their coach.
  • If a child misses testing, they will not receive a certificate or move up.

What does it mean when my child receives an attempted?

Attempting a level is by no means failing. During testing, coaches will reward each skill with a score out of 5. This is then placed into a spreadsheet for an overall percentage total. Attempted means that they have not received the total score needed to move up. This is okay; it simply means that they have a few skills that need to be developed before they can safely attempt new skills. Parents are welcome to ask coaches for specific feedback regarding their child.

My child missed testing week. How long until they can move up?

If a child misses testing, they will be in the same class until the next testing period. In most cases, this does not affect the class that they are in. Regardless of what level your child is in, the coaches will strive to continue to challenge each child to improve.
