Swimability Holiday Intensives

Swimability Holiday Intensives

"My son James has been participating in the holiday intensive Swimability classes with Denise. I feel it’s really important that I share with you what a wonderful program this has been and how wonderful Denise has been with James.

James is 11 and is non verbal, but he has a real sense of what he likes and what he doesn’t! Denise has just the right amount of nurturing encouragement and stern demeanour when required, and that really has gotten the best out of James.

As a family, over the years we have trialled a number of swim schools, but I cannot speak highly enough of Denise and the Swimability program at Ku ring gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre.  James has really grown in confidence in the water throughout the holiday period and is becoming more and more ‘water safe’. For us as a family, this provides us with a much greater sense of reassurance when visiting the beach and friends who have pools.

I am well aware that YMCA subsidises the cost of the Swimability program to allow equal access to swim classes for kids with disabilities. I cannot express what a difference this makes to families like ours, to have our children treated like every other ‘typical kid’. In the disability world it is all too common that our kids are placed in the too hard basket. It is so refreshing and supportive to see the YMCA attitude of ‘how can we help?

So from my family, thank you for a wonderful program and particular thanks to Denise."

Anthony.

The YMCA's Swimability program means that everyone can have access to potentially life-saving swimming lessons. The program helps to develop aquatic fitness and water safety skills for people of all ages with physical and intellectual disabilities.
