Two squad participants from the Y Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre share how they have overcome their fears, gained confidence, and developed new skills with the guidance of Y NSW swim instructors.
Swimming is a powerful confidence builder, helping people develop new skills, overcome challenges, and gain a sense of achievement that grows with every lap.
10-year-old Daniella joined the swim school at Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre when she was five years old. She was nervous to begin with, but now she swims as part of the Silver Squad.
“My biggest challenge was getting into the pool because I was scared. As I kept coming to lessons, I became much more confident, especially when I moved into the 25-metre pool,” she said.
“I am really proud to have progressed into the squad program. I enjoy coming to training every day because I like challenging myself and improving my swimming.
“I have also enjoyed taking part in swimming carnivals, which have helped me build my confidence and gain more experience. I would definitely recommend this swim school to other children because the teachers are really kind, supportive and make swimming fun.”
11-year-old Zoe was also nervous when she first began swimming lessons, and is now part of the Bronze Squad.
“I started swimming at the Y when I was five years old in the Sardine level,” she said.
“When I first started, I was really scared of the water. As I kept coming to lessons and practising, swimming became much easier and I grew more confident.”
The biggest challenge for Zoe was transferring from the program pool into the 25-metre pool when she progressed to Salmon level.
“It felt like a big step, but with the support of my teachers I became more comfortable and confident,” she said.
“One of the skills that took me the longest to learn was diving. It wasn't easy at first, but I kept trying and eventually achieved it.”
She said her teachers have played a large role in building her confidence.
“I still remember my teacher, Elsa. She was a great teacher who always encouraged me and helped me improve,” Zoe said.
“The teachers encourage you every step of the way, help you overcome your fears, and support you as you achieve your goals. Swimming has been a wonderful experience for me, and I'm proud of how far I've come.”
