Two Services, One Purpose: Central Coast Visit Highlights the Power of Connection

The Y NSW’s CEO Rob Kennaugh and COO George Perry recently embarked on a meaningful trip to the Central Coast to see and experience two Y services offered there. 

They began with bingo before visiting Streetgym.

“What struck us was the connection between the two,” George said.  

“At bingo, we spent time with Jo, Nick and the team and saw the important role it plays in bringing people together. For many people, it's a chance to connect with friends, enjoy themselves and be part of their community.

“What is less visible is that bingo also helps generate funds that are reinvested into our Young People Services programs.”

The impact of the funds raised at bingo was prevalent when Gin, Shay and Issy welcomed Rob and George to Streetgym.

Streetgym is a free Y NSW youth program that brings sport, fitness, mentoring, and social activities directly into local neighbourhoods, giving young people aged 12 to 18 a safe and welcoming place to stay active, connect with friends, and build community. It also links participants with local youth support services while offering activities such as basketball, soccer, dodgeball, games, music, and free snacks

“More than a program, Streetgym is a place where young people feel safe, supported and accepted,” George said.

“The strong relationships the team has built with young people were immediately obvious, as was their commitment to helping them build confidence, develop life skills and find positive pathways forward.”

George said that seeing both services on the same day was a powerful reminder of how the Y creates impact.

“Earlier, we had seen community members coming together through bingo, then a few hours later, we saw how activities like bingo help make programs such as Streetgym possible. It's a great example of communities supporting communities and our values being brought to life through the work of our people,” he said.

“We left feeling incredibly proud of the teams we met. From Jo and Nick at bingo, to Gin, Issy and Shay at Streetgym, we saw the Y at its best: creating connection through a safe environment and helping people thrive.”
