Sport has the power to change lives; it builds confidence, creates friendships, develops resilience, and teaches skills that extend far beyond the court. At Ryde Community Sports Centre, the Y NSW's Learn to Play program helps children take their first steps into sport in a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment.

For many young people, trying a new sport can feel intimidating. Learning the rules, meeting new people and developing skills takes confidence. Learn to Play is designed to make that journey easier, with qualified coaches who focus on participation, skill development, and fun.

Fourteen-year-old Raymond Cai knows firsthand the value of the program.

"I've been coming here for six years. My dad really loved basketball, so he taught me since I was young and I wanted to develop my skills," he said.

Over the years, Raymond has not only developed his basketball skills but also found a community that keeps him motivated.

"I enjoy the coaches and the friendly atmosphere. It doesn't feel like a chore; it's fun and it's something I enjoy."

More Than Just Sport

Learn to Play helps children develop fundamental movement and sporting skills such as coordination, balance, teamwork and communication. Through basketball and multi-sports sessions, participants build confidence while discovering the activities they enjoy most.

The program's focus is not on winning. Instead, it creates a positive environment where children are encouraged to learn, make mistakes, and improve at their own pace. This helps young people develop a healthy relationship with sport and physical activity from an early age.

Supporting the Whole Child

The benefits of Learn to Play extend beyond the court. Participants develop important life skills including resilience, respect and teamwork, while building friendships and a sense of belonging within their community.

At the Y NSW, the goal isn't simply to teach sport. It's to help young people become active, confident and connected. Whether a child dreams of playing competitively or simply wants to stay active and have fun, Learn to Play provides a strong foundation for the future.

And for children who might be nervous about taking that first step, Raymond has some simple advice:

"Don't be nervous,” he encouraged.

About Learn to Play at Ryde Community Sports Centre

Mother of two Jenny said her sons enjoy learning to play basketball at the Y Ryde.

“My kids go to school nearby, so the Y is very convenient. We come here every week, and they have a basketball class they attend,” she said.

“They also have pickleball which is very popular nowadays. It’s very convenient and easy to come to.

"They have a lot of variety, it’s easy to get a hold of them and book a court, and they have football fields outside."
