From Y Children to Y Colleagues: Three Siblings Come Full Circle at Y Epping

What started as childhood visits to the Y Epping has become a shared career path for three siblings who now work at the centre that helped shape them. Timed with Children’s Week, their story is a powerful reminder of how supportive environments can influence a young person’s future.

From Y Children to Y Colleagues: Three Siblings Come Full Circle at Y Epping

The Y NSW witnesses a lot of firsts – first swimming lessons, first dribble on a basketball court, first paintings at our early learning centres, and much more.

But for some people, the Y NSW is also a very important second – a second home. For siblings Mitch, Jake and Tessa, that is the Y Epping.

All three started their journey with the Y NSW as participants in gymnastics. Mitch and Tessa discovered a passion for it, while Jake pivoted and pursued soccer through the Learn to Play program instead.

By their teenage years, they were being mentored for coaching roles before eventually becoming coaches themselves, supporting children to learn new skills and have fun.

Mitch is now a Gymnastics Coordinator, Jake a coach and birthday party organiser, and Tessa a coach and Customer Service Officer.

“I would say this is another home for us, and we all have a fun time and share experiences with each other,” Jake said.

Tessa described the Y as a place where she was supported not just as an athlete, but as an individual.

“It was always very friendly,” she said.

“All the staff members… and all the coaches I had were all very nice and welcoming and encouraging. It wasn't very strict, at least competitive-wise…which sometimes it can be.”

Now, the siblings pride themselves on the difference they make in the lives of children through their roles.

“It’s not just seeing your group of gymnasts do gymnastics, but also teaching them life lessons,” Mitch said.

“Just teaching them how to be…,” he trailed off before Tessa assisted.

“Kind towards others, a bit of discipline in themselves and then definitely teamwork,” Tessa said.

“Confidence for sure,” Jake added.

“Just be the best version they can be of themselves.”

This Children’s Week, we are grateful to Mitch, Jake and Tessa - and every coach, volunteer and educator - for their contribution to the Y NSW and for their efforts to inspire the lives of children.

This year’s Children’s Week theme, 'Children have the right to use their own language, celebrate their culture and practice their religion', reminds us of the importance of creating spaces where every child feels respected, included and empowered to be themselves.

For many people, the ability to feel safe, form connections and thrive start here, at the Y.
