Youth Unemployment Rates are Rising: If you’re looking for a great opportunity, the Y NSW has 250 of them

19 Nov 2021 - Media Releases

The word on the street when it comes to youth unemployment is not a positive one – Australian Bureau Statistics figures show a jump from just under 11 percent in September to just over 13 percent in October. That doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a 21 percent increase since September and underemployment stands at 17.5 percent for young people.

The Courier Mail yesterday published an article that has the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison quoted as saying: “Australia is reopening safely and to secure our economic recovery we want to see more Australians in jobs this Christmas and summer.”

“There’s hundreds of thousands of jobs available and we want you,” the Prime Minister said.

The PM is right. The Y NSW wants you.

The Y is one of Australia’s leading employers of young people, with work and career pathways in sport and recreation facility management, operations, business development, human resources, childcare, youth and community services, administration, business planning and strategy, communications and marketing.

“We believe in the power of inspired young people – we hire them, we train them, we develop and value our talent,” said Natalie Thomas, Executive Leader of People & Culture at the Y NSW. “We currently have 250 great jobs on offer across New South Wales – right now.

“We are urging young people to apply for positions as lifeguards and swimming instructors in particular, as these are great starting points with flexible work arrangements that provide on-the-job learning in teaching, customer service, community engagement and leadership,” Ms Thomas said. “You don’t need to have prior experience – we will train you – and from there, your options with the Y are so diverse and the potential for your career is endless.”

“I started my career at the Y NSW as a lifeguard at Hawkesbury Oasis Aquatic and Leisure Centre – that was 13 years ago,” said Shane Simmons. “I’m now the Head of Growth and Business Development – so the Y backs its people to learn, thrive and build a career.”

There are 250 jobs currently on offer at the Y NSW, including:

This is by no means an exhaustive list – you can view all our positions vacant here
