Skateboard League Clarendon

07 Oct 2016 - Media ReleasesYouth

Some of the best talent in Western Sydney will be carving up Clarendon Skate Park as part of the NSW local rounds of the National SkatePark Leagues, on Friday 7 October.

This event, which is one of a series of amateur events being held at skate parks across Australia, offers the chance for boarders and riders to pull out their best lazer flips, ollies, 360s and mctwists as they compete to be champion of their region.

In addition to being a local hero, the winners will progress to the NSW State finals where they’ll compete for a spot in the national SkatePark League finals to be held in March 2017 in Melbourne.

The SkatePark Leagues is more than just skateboards and kick flips – BMX and Scooter aficionados can show off their skills and young people with a disability can compete in the Wheelies category.

Plus, with October being Mental Health Month, the event will highlight the importance of physical activity to mental health, and we’ll be joined by community organisations Head Space, who’ll run a chill out zone in partnership with Hawkesbury City Council; Merana Aboriginal Services, with street art activities; Hawkesbury House, who’ll oversee a large community youth mural and Platform Youth Services, who’ll supply free pancakes!

YMCA NSW CEO Leisa Hart said: “Skate leagues have been making headlines in the US for quite a few years and now we’re able to bring the same excitement and opportunities to young people here.

“The SkatePark League competition offers all skaters and riders the chance to test their skills at the highest level. We’re really excited to be involved and to help young people in Clarendon and across NSW continue to reach their potential.”

Competition is open to young people aged 12-25 with registration on the day. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Everyone is encouraged to watch the action and join in the fun, with free food, activities and entertainment provided as part of the festival.

YMCA NSW and Hawkesbury City Council are proud to be official partners of the NSW SkatePark League.
