Basketball is more than just a sport. It's about community, connection and having fun. Or, as Fergus puts it, "It's life."
On Sunday evenings, the quiet streets of North Ryde come alive as the Y Ryde Community Sports Centre becomes a hub of energy, camaraderie and friendly competition. Week after week, teams take to the courts to compete, connect and share their love of the game in our social and competitive basketball competitions.
Among them is , who currently wear the undefeated crown after an incredible run of 10 consecutive victories at Ryde.
For team member Sean Matambo , it all started with a simple invitation.
"Our friends told us to come and play at the Y, so we all showed up. And we all stayed. We like it here."
Sean's teammates, Fergus Allison, and Allegra Caleo, agree that Ryde has become their basketball home. They love the convenience of having a quality sports centre close to home, but it's the welcoming atmosphere that keeps them coming back.
"The vibes are great, the referees are fantastic, and the courts are excellent."
The team also appreciate the little things that make game nights easier, including court staff who manage the scorer's bench. Unlike at many other venues, teams don't need to find additional volunteers to fill these roles, making for a smoother and more enjoyable competition experience.
The winning streak continued last Sunday evening, with Wolf Pack securing another impressive victory, defeating 'Thomas & Friends' 72-43.
And for anyone feeling confident enough to challenge them, the team's message is simple:
"Come down to Ryde and take us on. Game on!"

Why Basketball Belongs in Every Child's Week
Choosing an activity for a young athlete can feel like a long list of trade-offs — cost, timing, whether they'll actually enjoy it, whether it will hold their attention for more than a fortnight. Basketball solves more of that list than most people expect. It's fast enough to be genuinely fun, structured enough to teach real skills, and social enough that it builds friendships alongside fitness.
