Fifteen years ago, Jacqui Osborne began umpiring netball games at Ryde Community Sports Centre. Since then, she has seen the centre grow into a cornerstone of the local sporting community.

As a netball umpire at Ryde Community Sports Centre for 15 years, Jacqui Osborne has had a front-row seat to the growth of a sporting community that has become a key part of lives across Ryde.
What began as a new opportunity for Jacqui quickly became a long-term commitment.
"I saw that they were advertising for umpires for a youth social comp, and I thought I would give that a go," she said about her origins with the Y Ryde.
For Jacqui, netball has always been part of life. With a mother who also played and umpired, the sport became a family tradition. She began umpiring while still at school to earn pocket money, balancing officiating with her own playing career.
"I actually played in the Thursday comp when it started, and then started umpiring on Mondays," she said.
While a love of the game sparked her involvement, it's the people who have kept her coming back year after year.
"It's nice to get out of the house and get paid to exercise, but I wouldn't come back if I didn't enjoy the people,” Jacqui explained.
Over 15 years, she has seen firsthand the loyalty the centre inspires.
"It's a great little comp, and you see that when teams come back. There are teams that have been here since the start, and that's a testament to what a nice community this is," she said.
The strongest memories aren't tied to grand finals or standout performances. Instead, they are the moments that demonstrate the lasting impact of community sport.
"I've seen kids grow up," Jacqui said.
"They come with their parents and they're a little baby on the sidelines, and then they're the ones playing netball."
It's a reflection of what has made Ryde Community Sports Centre such an important part of the local community for the past 15 years. Beyond the courts, the centre has become a place where friendships are formed, skills are developed and generations of families stay connected through sport.
While much has changed over the years, Jacqui believes one of the centre's greatest strengths is what hasn't changed.
"A lot of things have stayed the same, which I think is a benefit because it means that it works," she said.
"People enjoy coming here, they keep coming back, which means you're doing something right.
"It's a great place for people to come and have a go. It doesn't matter how good you are or what your goals are for sport. You can turn up and have a run around with your friends; it caters to all levels."
Asked what makes the Y Ryde different from other sporting venues, Jacqui's answer is simple.
"The people. The comps have continued and grown, and the reason for that is because people are actually invested in them. This is a great place for people to come and enjoy their sport."
As Ryde Community Sports Centre celebrates its 15th birthday, Jacqui hopes the centre continues to thrive for many years to come.
"With the way things are going, community-led and community-focused programs are definitely going by the wayside these days," she said.
"It's so important to maintain these facilities so they don't get lost."
Jacqui's story reflects the heart of Ryde Community Sports Centre: a community built on sport, sustained by people, and strengthened by the connections made along the way.
