2nd April 2018 - Broken Hill Council gives the green light for construction to begin on the new YMCA wellness centre

2 Apr 2018

The exciting redevelopment of Broken Hill YMCA is a step closer today following the granting of the development application for construction by Council at last night’s meeting.

YMCA NSW was awarded $3.9 million from the NSW Government under the Restart NSW Resources for Regions program in January last year to redevelop the site into a wellness centre for the Broken Hill community.

YMCA NSW CEO Leisa Hart said the project is progressing well.

"We continue to be on track at this point in time and we are in final negotiations with our preferred tenders to deliver the project," Ms Hart explained. "We expect the construction work will commence in the coming weeks."

The project will see the demolition of about one third of the current site and restoration work to the former German Club on Chloride Street. The existing indoor stadium will be re-purposed with an internal wall separating a new gymnastics studio and multi-purpose area. The works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The new YMCA Wellness Centre will deliver many significant health and wellbeing outcomes to the Broken Hill community. Expanded programs and services will be offered, and seventeen new jobs will be created, including three for Indigenous people.

YMCA NSW has been involved with the Broken Hill community for 100 years, and more than half of the not for profit’s 100 locations are in rural and regional areas. For more information on YMCA NSW locations and programs, visit www.ymcansw.org.au
