YMCA NSW Junior Parliament

What is YMCA NSW Junior Parliament?

Junior Parliament is an apolitical program that introduces young people to the legal and parliamentary process of NSW and empowers them to be advocates for their community! Young people have the opportunity to create solutions to the problems facing NSW and debate those ideas in NSW Parliament House in front of real MPs!

What is involved?

Junior Parliament involves a week long camp in the September holidays.

Participants receive skills training and leadership development before heading to NSW Parliament to spend two days debating in the chamber in front of real Members of Parliament!

“Junior MPs” will debate ideas and solutions they have created to problems in NSW that they have identified. All passed legislation is handed to the NSW Government and Opposition at the conclusion of the week.

Our 2016 Program - Basic Details

Is Junior Parliament right for me?

Participants must be in years 7-9 or equivalent in order to participate.

If you’re passionate about your community and the future of NSW, if you have an open mind and are willing to learn, and if you want to meet new people and have a life-changing experience, then Junior Parliament is right for you!

Who runs the program?

The Junior Parliament program is run by a team of 18 volunteers called “The Taskforce,” lead by Program Coordinator Ruby-Lyn Ward. All taskforce members are past participants of a Y&G program. They are there to guide the participants on their leadership journey and empower them to unlock their inner leader and advocate!

How much does it cost?

The cost of attending the program is $450. This includes all meals, accommodation and transport while on camp (not including transport to and from camp).
