Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

A: The National Disability Insurance Scheme is often referred to as NDIS and it’s a new way for people with a disability to receive and access support, offering more choice, control and a long term approach to each individual's needs.

Q: What is the National Disability Insurance Agency?

A: The National Disability Insurance Agency is often referred to as NDIA, and their role is to implement and oversee the NDIS. When the NDIS becomes available in your region, the NDIA will contact you to discuss your needs. A planner with meet with you to assist you in developing a support plan and you will be given a budget, which you can choose to spend with approved service providers of your choice, such as the YMCA.

Q: Who is eligible for the NDIS Funding?

A: The NDIS will support people up to age 65 who have a significant and permanent disability which means they need assistance with every day activities. This includes people whose disability is intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, physical impairment or psychiatric conditions. The NDIA will made individual assessments on each person to evaluate suitability and budget allowances.

Q: I am currently receiving support from another provider, what will the NDIS mean?

A: The NDIS will give you the control to choose what kind of service you would like and what provider you would like to use. You will need to work with a planner from the NDIA who will help identify you support needs and will give you an allocated budget. From there you can decide which provider you would like to go with.

Q: Why choose to receive support from the YMCA NSW?

A: The YMCA is dedicated to creating happier, healthier, connected communities. We have a range of programs available under the NDIS, which are suitable for a range of ages! We have empowered and re-trained our work-force to be NDIS Ready. Have a look at what our existing participants have to say about our inclusive programs:

“The Swim Ability Program helps my son physically and socially, [it] also helps his communication skills. Nathan loves to swim and I believe its relaxing for him” – Helen (Mother of a SwimAbility Program Participant)

“Our son can join our family at the pool in the water without screaming and biting/fighting us. While he can’t 'swim' he moves through the water and he can tread water/make his way out of the deep. He also allows water on his head, which was not possible prior. He watches other children in the pool and mirrors their movements. He is happy!” – Leonie (Mother of a SwimAbility Program Participant)

Q: Where can I find more information?

A: For additional information please contact us via email on, or you can visit the NDIS's website at
