John, 53, joined Brightside at Manning Aquatic Leisure Centre in 2014 to meet people and exercise after experiencing anxiety and depression.
"At the time I was doing a lot of walking but by myself, so it was great to get involved in group sports," said John.
"I really enjoyed the social aspect and being able to meet people and make friends – there’s a group of us who continue to see each other regularly."
John's now a valued member of the YMCA family.
"After I finished the program I was asked to stay on at the Y to volunteer. I do all sorts of tasks including maintaining the gym equipment, helping others and supporting Brightside participants." he said.
“I’ve also recently completed my Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work following encouragement from the Y staff. You could say Brightside has opened lots of doors for me and given me new direction in my life.”
