In February 2017, the YMCA launched the national ‘Why Not?’ campaign to champion our organisation’s three new platforms. The platforms, youth unemployment, youth mental health and marriage equality, were identified by young people in Australia as the most significant to them. YMCA NSW is working to build engagement and rejuvenate our relevance and support to the LGBTI+ community by championing our organisational values of inclusion, diversity and acceptance.
Research shows LGBTI+-supportive policies and workplace climates are linked to greater job commitment, improved workplace relationships, increased job satisfaction and improved health outcomes among LGBTI+ employees.
YMCA NSW has begun actively participating in community outreach and celebration events like the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Fair Day, International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia and Wear It Purple Day. We have also been updating our policies and procedures to more accurately reflect our diverse staff and customers.
